Read the 11 year old paper by Larry McVoy called The Sourceware Operating System Proposal.
Is really fun to read now. Its basically, Unix is dead, Micsofts is going to win and Linux is coming bigtime. Not far from the thruth is it? Larry was working at Sun when he wrote it.

Sun is thinking about how to make money of open source. Did they every read Larrys paper?
