Trolls anyone?

Read the 11 year old paper by Larry McVoy called The Sourceware Operating System Proposal.
Is really fun to read now. Its basically, Unix is dead, Micsofts is going to win and Linux is coming bigtime. Not far from the thruth is it? Larry was working at Sun when he wrote it.

Sun is thinking about how to make money of open source. Did they every read Larrys paper?

Open source

Read a few interesting articles about open source:

First , a travel story in Swedish written by Christian Engström, FFII.se. He traveled through Finland and the Baltic states with rms and marco shultze of German ffii . Here is page in English. Short but ok.

Second article was called Microsoft sings a new tune on Linux. A short story about Microsofts changing attitude towards Linux. Interesting.

Third an article about why apple never "made it" and never became what Microsoft is today. Don't know about the analysis.....

Fourth, a discussion of Linux and Patent Risks. Very nice article.

Fifth, the not so good The Business Value of Open Source.

Last, Impressions of LinuxWorld. Looks promising for Linux!!!!

Alittle here and a little there

Browsed throw Better, Faster, Lighter Programming in .NET and Java and I found it very interesting. Interesting to see all thoose java apps being ported to .net. Why? It .net more fun to code? Is it a better enviroment or is it just natural?

Also read a short pice on Mitch Kapor of Lotus fame over at oreilly in Inside Mitch Kapor's World.
Not to much info thiere.

Linux and microsoft

Read a transcript of Andrew Morton's speech at Ottawa Linux Symposium 2004. Very interesting and fun. Also had a look at an article in newsweek about Micorosfts patent portfolio.
Maybe the only solution for Linux is if a mayor player buys Suse or Red Hat. A player with lots of patents. Anyone?

Had a look at a new .net book at oreilly, Mono: A Developer's Notebook. The sample chapter looks really nice.

Reading and thinking

Just read an article by Paul Graham about great hackers. Very interesting. Want more ? Check out slashdot.
I think I have to buy that book. Talking about books. I just read the pragmatic programmer.
A great book. Are you a developer? Get it! Its one of the few you ever have to read.
